However, one YouTuber took it to the next level by constructing a DIY elevator, all in an effort to simplify life for his cherished senior cat.

Liam Thompson, a YouTuber hailing from New Zealand, has garnered 1.86 million subscribers to his channel, where he engages in “stupid stuff on camera.” His videos often showcase the construction of unconventional homemade inventions, such as a “robot butler” and a “cardboard submarine.” Yet, Liam’s latest video features a heartwarming project: the creation of an elevator for his aging feline companion.

The cat, named Frodo, is approximately 20 years old, making him closer to Gandalf’s age in human terms and a true senior citizen in cat years. Despite his advanced age making mobility challenging, Frodo still manages to navigate the stairs daily to reach the backyard deck, where he enjoys basking in the sun.

To facilitate Frodo’s movements and provide him with greater ease, Liam embarked on a project to construct an elevator for navigating the stairs. The endeavor involves the creation of a cat-sized cart designed to move up and down a rail, reminiscent of a roller coaster. The video captures Liam diligently working on the construction, meticulously building and testing the elevator from the ground up.

The initial test run of the homemade cat elevator goes “surprisingly well,” as mentioned by Liam. Following this success, he dedicates the next few days to ensure the safety of the track, enhancing its appearance with a coat of paint to make it visually appealing.

Anticipation builds as Liam prepares to let Frodo experience the elevator for the first time. With his senior cat looking a bit bewildered, Liam asks, “Are you ready to go downstairs without having to move a muscle?” It’s a heartwarming moment as Liam introduces Frodo to the innovative solution crafted specifically for his aging feline friend.

Everything functions flawlessly: the elevator smoothly transports Frodo down the stairs, and the cat heads to his favorite sun spot—perhaps a bit bewildered but undoubtedly content with the effortless lift. Ten minutes later, the cat returns to the elevator, which promptly takes him back upstairs.

“I am absolutely fizzing right now,” the YouTuber says, adding that it’s the “greatest day of [his] life.”
