Thor, the Chihuahua, embodies everything expected of an 8-week-old puppy – inquisitive, with a hearty appetite, and a penchant for cuddles and playtime with his newfound foster sister. However, just a week ago, his life took a drastic turn.
In Dickinson, Texas, animal control officers responded to a complaint about a waste bag on the side of the road, suspecting movement within. When they opened it, they discovered Thor, a tiny 3-pound Chihuahua, infested with fleas and covered in blood. His right eye was out of place, and he shivered from the cold. Despite wearing a collar, it was evident that he had been abandoned. Rushed to Animal Kingdom Pet Hospital, Thor’s right eye was so severely inflamed that vets decided to remove it. Puncture scars on his body indicated he may have been attacked by another dog.
“We had no idea if he would survive the surgery to remove his eye,” said Kristin Smith, a clinic vet tech. “Luckily, he pulled through, and everything went better than expected.” Thor, at just 8 weeks old, was rescued just in time. Smith believes that, at his age, he would not have survived another night alone inside the sack. She decided to take him home so he could heal in a safe environment, also assisting the local shelter, Bayou Animal Services, which offered to pay for his care. “The shelter has already been stretched thin with so many pet surrenders this holiday season, so I knew it would be better for him to recover in a home,” she added.
Thor is thriving in his foster home and has quickly adapted to being loved. Despite his challenging start in life, he is healing well from his surgery and is being treated for various parasites. At just 8 weeks old, Thor is adjusting to life with one eye, and his foster mom reports that it doesn’t seem to bother him. As he grows, he will continue to receive puppy vaccines, and the stitches on his eyelid will be removed in the coming weeks. Thor’s affectionate nature and resilience have won the hearts of everyone he meets.
Thor is expected to be ready for a permanent home shortly after the New Year, but for now, he’s enjoying the love and comfort of his foster mom and his cozy blankets. Despite his challenging start in life, Thor is sleeping soundly and thriving, proving to be the perfect little puppy.
