The American Humane Hero Dog Awards recognize heroic dogs that go above and beyond, including guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, and search & rescue dogs. This year, the top honor went to Chi Chi, a therapy dog celebrated for her extraordinary bravery and good works. Chi Chi’s story is one of incredible resilience and inspiration.
Chi Chi, a Golden Retriever, began her journey in South Korea, where she faced unspeakable cruelty. Found in a garbage bag with her legs bound and necrotized, she was left for dead. Rescuers saved her by amputating portions of all four legs, but the true challenge was rehabilitating her spirit.
“When she first arrived at our home, she was afraid of people,” says her adopter, Elizabeth Howell of Phoenix, Arizona. “But with time and lots of love, she realized that she is safe. She forgave and decided to trust people again.”
Chi Chi adapted to her custom prosthetics and now spends her days as a certified therapy dog, sharing her joyful self with people of all ages. Despite her past horrors, she has nothing but love for those she meets. Her sweet temper and perceptive spirit open hearts, and she senses where her love is needed.
“When people meet Chi Chi, they are inspired by her courage, perseverance, ability to overcome adversity, and her never-give-up attitude. She exemplifies resilience and forgiveness,” shares Elizabeth.
