Originally from Brazil, Bert Fritz, a dedicated middle school science teacher at Next Generation Science School in Champaign, embarked on a life-changing journey when he encountered a heart-wrenching scene at Kaufman Lake. There, he discovered a struggling dog named Dory, a black and white puppy, fighting for survival amidst freezing waters, trapped in a dog crate.
With only Dory’s head above the icy water, Fritz, spotting the fish in the lake, didn’t hesitate to kick off his shoes and plunge into the freezing water. Braving the cold, he removed his layers of clothing and hoisted the helpless dog out of the water. The ordeal had taken its toll on Dory, with visible injuries and signs of suffering.
Despite the vet’s initial recommendation to euthanize Dory due to her condition, Fritz was determined to give her a chance at a better life. Contacting the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, he swiftly wrapped Dory in a blanket for warmth and rushed her to the hospital.
At the hospital, Dory responded well to treatments for hypothermia, wounds, and other injuries. Although her recovery journey was challenging, Dory’s resilience and Fritz’s dedication were unwavering. Fritz expressed his desire to adopt Dory, inspired by her strength and naming her after the Disney character from “Finding Nemo,” known for her unwavering spirit.
As Dory’s recovery continued, Fritz, along with his girlfriend Krystal, found themselves inspired by the dog’s resilience. The spontaneous act of bravery not only saved Dory but also opened a new, loving chapter in both their lives. The profound bond formed between humans and animals was exemplified through Fritz and Dory’s story, showcasing the transformative power of compassion and the potential for new beginnings.
