Olivia, a distressed dog, found her way to the Dumaguete Animal Sanctuary in the Philippines. In critical condition, she was discovered near a stream, her vision impaired by hunger after giving birth. Abandoned by her previous owner, the lack of mercy was evident. At that juncture, Olivia faced the possibility of perishing as a young mother, far removed from the comforts of an urban environment.
Transporting Olivia to such a remote location already speaks volumes about her owner’s desire for secrecy, aware of jeopardizing the safety of the helpless “ball of fur.” The owner, turning his back on the poor dog, aimed to avoid being seen by anyone, even if it meant subjecting the abandoned canine to immense cruelty—an act deserving total condemnation.
Even if the owner no longer had the means to provide for her needs, there were various less traumatic solutions available, such as entrusting the loyal adventure companion to a friend or discussing the situation with an animal shelter. Instead, he displayed complete disinterest in the fate of the “hairy little girl.”
Fortunately, amidst the capacity for terrible actions, traces of goodness endure. Volunteers from the facility swiftly reached the location and transported her to a secure place where she could be fed and provided with adequate shelter, shielded from the elements. Veterinarians examined the dog and discovered heartworms. Emaciated to an extreme degree, Olivia had expended her last bit of energy to give birth to her offspring.
Rehabilitating her would require time, but under the meticulous care of the facility, no goal would be beyond reach. Ultimately, it was a matter of instilling courage and self-confidence in her. The inherent tenacity and will to live within this little girl would eventually bring her back to a state of well-being.
