Originally from Brazil, Bert Fritz is a dedicated middle school science teacher at Next Generation Science School in Champaign. He initiated a challenging curriculum, hoping it would evolve into a lifelong passion. Upon arriving at Kaufman Lake, he encountered a struggling dog named Dory, a black and white puppy fighting for survival, trapped in icy water and confined in a dog crate.
With only Dory’s head above the freezing water, Fritz noticed the distressed dog. Without hesitation, he kicked off his shoes and entered the frigid lake to rescue the helpless dog. “I saw the partially submerged corpse,” Fritz recalls, “with his head above water but his body engulfed by the icy depths.” Erecting the lake wall was a wise decision.
On this chilly winter day, Fritz made a swift decision. He removed his sweaters and ventured 15 to 20 yards into the lake. Dory had clearly been in the frigid water for hours. Fritz promptly rescued her, pulling her out of the water along with the crate to safety. However, it became apparent that Dory’s ordeal had taken a severe toll. “There was blood everywhere,” Fritz said. “She was missing fur on her back, her paws were in bad shape, and she was visibly suffering, shaking and with her eyes shut.”
Without delay, Fritz contacted the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, informing them of the urgent situation. On his way, he wrapped Dory in a blanket to provide warmth. At the hospital, spokesperson Chris Beuoy reported that Dory was responding well to treatments for hypothermia, wounds, and other injuries, including antibiotics and pain medicine. “We were initially uncertain about the extent of care she’d need for her wounds, but she received comprehensive treatment,” Beuoy noted.
As Dory’s recovery continued, filled with hope and affection, Fritz expressed his desire to adopt her. “When I completed the hospital paperwork, I realized I wanted her in my life,” he shared. He and his girlfriend Krystal were inspired by Dory’s resilience, naming her after the beloved Disney character from “Finding Nemo,” famous for her unwavering spirit. “Like her namesake, Dory showed remarkable strength in that lake,” Fritz reflected.
