Balam’s story is both heart-wrenching and inspiring. Originally a rescue dog from the Querétaro Red Cross, Balam faced a life-threatening situation when he was poisoned while on a mission to Turkey to assist in search and rescue efforts after a devastating earthquake.
The poisoning occurred when a neighbor threw sausages infected with alkaloids at Balam while he was walking with his parents Athos and Tango, who were dedicated to the mission of saving puppies. The poisoning left Balam at a crossroads between life and death.
Despite this cruel act, a group of specialists from Mexico, including the Sedena, the Navy, the Red Cross, and the Topos, were sent to support Turkey in the aftermath of the earthquake. Balam, clinging to life, now had a new mission – to save others.
Balam, a hero without a cape, exhibited impartial behavior and resilience. He became an essential part of the search and rescue efforts, entering areas that humans couldn’t access to find and assist survivors.
The story also sheds light on the tragic loss of Balam’s parents, Athos and Tango, who fell victim to the poisoning. The perpetrator was prosecuted and received a 10-year prison term, marking the first instance of maltreatment leading to criminal prosecution in Mexico.
Balam’s resilience, bravery, and dedication to saving lives make him a symbol of hope and inspiration, showcasing the remarkable qualities that reside within dogs. Despite facing adversity, Balam continues to make a positive impact, conquering hearts and contributing to the ongoing efforts to help those affected by natural disasters.
